Ornamental iron and aluminum in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend

Black picket-style metal fences for front yards, pools, entrances and HOA common areas.

Ornamental metal fences give a clean, open look for front yards, pools, entrances and subdivision common areas. Two materials look alike from the street but behave very differently on the coast.

Aluminum vs steel or iron

  • Powder-coated aluminum does not rust, which makes it the usual pick near the bay, on Padre Island and in Port Aransas. It is lighter, so check the rail and picket gauge for strength.
  • Ornamental steel ("wrought iron") is stronger and heavier but rusts wherever the coating chips. Inland it can last for decades with touch-ups; in salt spray it needs galvanizing under the paint or powder coat, and regular care.

Pools and HOAs

Pool barriers have specific rules on height, picket spacing and self-closing, self-latching gates. HOAs often specify black aluminum and a set height for fronts. Check both before you order: see permits and HOA rules.

Typical installed cost: aluminum $25 to $75 per linear foot, ornamental steel or wrought iron $25 to $85 per linear foot (Fixr, Angi, Bob Vila, HomeGuide).

  • Fence type and height: wood, vinyl, chain link, iron or aluminum, ranch; 4, 6 or 8 ft
  • Length: rough linear feet, or the lot size. A sketch of the fence line helps
  • Gates: how many, walk or drive, manual or automatic
  • Old fence: anything to tear out and haul away
  • The site: slope, trees, sprinklers, and which side takes the wind off the bay
  • Rules and timing: HOA requirements, a pool, and your time window. Photos help; mention them and the contractor will ask.
